Friday night saw Class 2A wrestlers compete at the State Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines. The semifinals and both the fourth and fifth consolation rounds determined the top eight finishers in each of the 14 weight classes. Saturday’s consolation semifinals, consolation finals, and Championship matches will determine the order of finish.

Four area wrestlers were in the Friday night semifinals. Greene County had two of the four competing in senior Brent Dennhardt at 157 lbs. and sophomore Degan Miller at 165. Freshman Dylan Williamson of Van Meter at 106 and senior Jadyn Cooper of Winterset at 285 completed the area 2A semifinalists.

Williamson won by a 17-2 technical fall over the number one seed, Coy Mehlert of Union (La Porte City) to improve to 38-3. He’ll face third seeded Slater Thomas for the title. Thomas is a freshman at Eddyville-Blakeburg-Fremont and is 43-1.

Dennhardt scored a 5-4 decision over Tate Slagle of Algona. Dennhardt is a senior with a 28-2 mark and he overcame an early 3-0 deficit, closed the gap to 3-2, then won with a late take down and ride out. His finals opponent is Heart of Iowa Activities Conference wrestler Tucker Wheeler of PCM. They met in January with Dennhart winning by a 16-0 technical fall. Wheeler is 41-8 and seeded sixth while Dennhardt is the number eight seed.

Cooper won 1-0 over Atlantic’s Evan Sorensen, for the fourth time this season in as many meetings. The Winterset wrestler is the top seed and has a 35-1 record. His opponent tonight will be Kaden Clark of PCM, a senior who is 50-5 and the number 10 seed.

Miller lost by technical fall to Ballard (Huxley) senior Tucker Vitzthum, 17-2. The Ram sophomore will be in Saturday morning’s consolation semifinals and will place as high as third or as low as eighth.

Consolation wrestlers had to win in the fourth round to keep their hopes alive for placing in the top eight. A win in the fifth consolation round means placing as high as third is still possible. A fifth consolation round loss means a seventh or eighth place finish on Saturday.

All three Raccoon Valley Radio stations and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com will have all the play-by-play on Saturday starting at 9 a.m. starting with Class 3A, then 1A, followed by 2A.
