County has two Class 2A semifinalists at the State Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines in senior Brent Dennhardt (157 lbs.) and sophomore Degan Miller (165). Senior Gavyn Winters is still in the tournament on the consolation side of the 120 lbs. bracket and he needs a victory today to guarantee a place in the top eight. With their quarterfinals victories, Dennhardt and Miller are still in the running to win their brackets, and they’ve guaranteed themselves a top six finish at the very least.
Dennhardt (27-2) topped number one seeded Lucas Kral of Garner-Hayfield/Ventura 7-1 on Thursday night. He took the lead early and was never seriously challenged. Miller is now 35-8 and the sixth seeded Ram dominated third seeded Ryker Dengler of West Liberty by a 14-0 major decision. Dennhardt faces fifth seeded Tate Slagle of Algona and Miller meets Tucker Vitzthum of Ballard (Huxley) in tonight’s semifinals.
Winters, seeded eleventh, needs a victory over number 10 Judah Gurwell of Winterset to place in the top eight.
Twin brothers Brennan Jacobs (106) and Jaron Jacobs (113) went 2-2 and 1-2, respectively, but did not advance beyond the third consolation round. Senior Marcus Ball at 215 lbs. went 0-2.
Raccoon Valley Radio continues its “live” play-by-play at the State Wrestling Tournament today with 3A matches at 9 a.m., 1A at 1:30 p.m, and 2A at 6 p.m.
