With the Iowa Legislature putting out a bill that would ban cell phones being used in school, Perry Superintendent Clark Wicks shares his thoughts on the matter.
During Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds Condition of the State Address back in January, she released a bill that would restrict students from utilizing their cellular devices while actively in the classroom. Wicks tells Raccoon Valley Radio that the conversation surrounding cell phone use while in school is huge across the country, but he believes that there is a sweet spot for students and their devices.
“I think the main thing is that it’s very easy for anybody, but especially kids to get addicted to it, and then you get into mental health and all these kinds of things. So, I think there’s a balance with the cell phones so that they do have some accessibility, but yet not interfering with the whole learning process.”
Wicks understands that with the advancement of technology, cell phones can provide some educational purposes, but doesn’t want students to become distracted with mobile games or social media platforms. He’s anticipating the next steps from the legislature, as Reynolds states that all Iowa schools will need to adopt the rule of restricting cell phones by July 1st.
