In recent weeks, Governor Kim Reynolds and Iowa Auditor Rob Sand have butted heads on the transparency of Education Savings Accounts (ESA).
House Representative for District 23 Ray Sorensen says ESA is something that was passed, and is not currently on the legislative agenda, but that he knows it is something that Sand hasn’t been able to review the financials of since it was passed a few years ago. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio he can understand Sand’s frustration.
“Taxpayers deserve to know how their money’s spent. If the auditor is asking for records to ensure accountability, I’m sympathetic to that. But I don’t want him overstepping into private data or stalling a program that is just getting off the ground.”
Sorensen mentions that at this time, he’d say he’s with the governor on the matter, but that he believes a compromise where Sand is allowed access to the basic financial data would be something that should be done.
