With some high probability of blizzard-like conditions for tonight and tomorrow morning from the National Weather Service, law enforcement is reminding motorists of some safety tips.
Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams advises drivers to leave earlier than normal to give yourself enough time to make it to your destination. He points out that with up to six inches of heavy snowfall mixed with rainfall and strong, gusty winds speeds of 50 miles per hour and over, reduced visibility will be one of the biggest issues for motorists, which he suggests slowing down and utilizing this function with your vehicle.
“Anytime you are in low visibility, I would say you’re safe and better off to put your four-way hazards on. Because then it gives everybody more time to react, because sometimes in blizzards you might not see the car ahead of you until you’re 20 feet away from it, and if they’re doing 30 (mph) and you’re doing 50 (mph) you’ve got a problem. So using the hazards is a good thing especially in low visibility.”
Williams also recommends to pack a blanket, bottled water, snacks and cell phone charger and make sure your vehicle has a full tank of gas so that if you slide off the road and into a ditch, you are prepared to be there for a while as law enforcement may have delays getting to you due to the reduced visibility on the roadways. The non-emergency number to the Greene County Law Enforcement Center is 515-386-2155.
