
The current blizzard conditions are severely and negatively affecting Greene County at this time.
Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams says that roads are impassable in Greene County, and reports between 50-60 vehicles that have been reported stranded or in ditches. He highly advises not traveling at this time due to the whiteout conditions. Williams adds that if anyone gets stranded, they should call the Greene County Sheriff’s Office at 515-386-2136 to report where they are.
Greene County Engineer Wade Weiss says that County crews are now out and working on clearing roads, and will continue to do so until 5pm, then return to road clearing activities at 5am tomorrow. He adds that Highway 30 is closed at this time, and will continue to be so for the rest of the day.
Midland Power Cooperative Director of Marketing, Communications and Energy Services Ryan Henn says that at peak conditions, they had 350 outages reported in Greene County, and shares that their crews are currently out where possible to assess damages and begin to restore power. He adds that efforts are severely hampered by current weather conditions, and that members should expect prolonged power loss until crews can safely work.
Jefferson Public Works Director Dave Morlan advises residents to stay home, citing terrible road conditions and low visibility as reasons to stay indoors. He adds that his crews are working to clear city streets, but that progress is slow, and asks that residents remove their vehicles from roadways when possible to make the efforts easier.
