District assignments were released for high school football last week. In this 5 part series, we will look at the 5 District games Perry will play this fall. Part 1 will feature one of the longest rivalry games in Iowa.
The “Battle for the Cowbell” will mean more in 2025. Perry and Greene County will share a District for football the next two years. The rivalry game didn’t need any more motivation for the two squads, but the winner will also a better chance at qualifying for the playoffs. When the two clubs meet it will be the 95th edition of the “Cowbell” series. Greene County has won the last 7 matchups including 36-7 last year. The Rams have won over two-thirds of games with Perry dating back to 1928 when the Rotary Clubs of Perry and Jefferson added the rotating “trophy”.
Perry football coach, Josh Vannornam, was pleased with having the game on the schedule and it becoming a District game. “It honestly gives me the chills. We got to chill thinking about how much more I think of a rival it is going to be for the kids and the school districts. We’re excited when we saw them on the schedule so I’d be a fun game. It’ll mean something more now for us, both schools.”
The Bluejays and Rams share the 3A District 6 with Atlantic, Carroll, Creston, and Harlan.
