With weather for the most part starting to return to more decent conditions, there are still things people should remember when it comes to road safety.
Iowa State Patrol Trooper Shelby McCreedy says that even with weather conditions improving and temperatures climbing, there is still a possibility of winter road conditions depending on the day.
“One of the things people need to understand is road conditions and the surfaces change with the weather. And I know that sounds pretty simplistic, but the reality is when the ground freezes and thaws, there is movement. Frost comes from the ground up. So even though the temperatures outside might be decent, you know, if we’ve got frost coming up through the pavement or the surfaces, it can create slick spots.”
McCreedy mentions that during the mornings where temperatures go from a warmer night to maybe a cooler temperature in the daytime, that’s where some frost occurs, especially on bridges and overpasses. She adds that frost at times like this can lead to black ice, so people still need to be vigilant of slick conditions.
