Multiple students with Perry High School recently had an opportunity to perform in an academic regional competition.
According to Perry Advisor Tom Lipovac, nine students participated in the Iowa State Bar Association Mock Trial Central Regional Contest on March 4th in Des Moines. He shares that the premise of the mock trial is to introduce students to the legal system by providing a challenging, academic competition. Lipovac details that each student is assigned a specific role within a court room. He outlines that Perry represented the plaintiff in the first round going against Waukee Northwest High School, and accumulated a performance score of 228-266.5.
He mentions that the students followed that up by playing the defendant in the second round versus Ankeny High School, where they scored 208-236.5. Lipovac pinpoints that the teams are awarded performance points based on their ability to effectively portray the roles of attorneys and witnesses while engaging in the courtroom process and displaying critical thinking and presentation skills. He acknowledges he loves seeing students’ eagerness to learn more about the justice system. The full list of students that were apart of the regional contest can be found below.
