
The Greene County Historical Society has teamed up with another non-profit organization to sponsor a free program this Sunday.
The historical society and the Friends of the Greene County Parks are going to host a program on the local native area of the Tipton Prairie that is southeast of Cooper and near Squirrel Hollow Park with special guest speaker, Thomas Rosburg. According to the historical society, as a prairie expert. Rosburg recently surveyed the Tipton Prairie and identified over 180 native plants and is developing a management plan to eliminate the invasive non-native plants without using chemicals.
Organizers say Rosburg will inform attendees about “What Every Iowan Should Understand About Iowa’s Prairie Heritage.” A member of the Friends of the Parks, Chris Henning who lives near the Tipton Prairie and believes this is one of, if not the best virgin prairies left in the state. Currently, the Tipton Prairie is owned by the Greene County Conservation Department. Sunday’s program begins at 2pm at the Historical Museum in Jefferson.
