Last week, a bill that has been in the works for many years was passed by the Iowa Senate.
District 12 Senator Amy Sinclair says that the Chamber advanced a bill focusing on distracted driving. She tells Raccoon Valley Radio that when she first was elected as a Senator, she didn’t see the need for a distracted driving bill, but that after seeing all the data presented on subject, she’s changed her mind.
“When a person is doing something inside their car that makes them so distracted that they’re causing harm to other people, whether their property or their personal health and safety, then suddenly this is a place where we need to have a law. I think we can all tell stories of driving down the road and (having) somebody coming at us in the wrong lane and, you know, realizing that it’s because they are distracted, they’re on their phones, they’re not paying attention to their driving. And so I’m excited that we have taken that step to get the distracted driving bill through the Senate.”
Sinclair mentions that the bill now will go to the House for approval, but also notes that this is the point in the process that other distracted driving bills have stalled in previous legislative sessions.
