The registration deadline is fast approaching for the youngest level of soccer with the Jefferson Parks and Recreation Department.

Assistant Director Henry Pohlmeyer says the 6U soccer program is April 7th through May 5th with practices and games taking place at Kelso Park in Jefferson. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio this is meant to introduce four and five year olds to soccer with some basic skills and fundamentals, along with games between the teams. Pohlmeyer talks about all of the youth soccer programs from U6-U15 being led by volunteer parents and other adults.

“And of course I have to thank the coaches and the parents for that. I mean that’s who is doing a lot of the fundamental training. I remember back in the day, 6U (soccer) was more about go to the ball and just huddle around, but again those are the coaches and those are the parents who have been involved for the past several years who are kind of spearheading that. I’ve heard we have a pretty good program and we’re pretty competitive in the world. That’s what we try to do is just build on the success we have and keep on moving, keep and expanding, and keep on progressing.”

The registration deadline is March 31st with a fee of $20 for Greene County Community Center members and $25 for non-members. Pohlmeyer asks for everyone to be at Kelso Park for the initial meeting at 5:30pm on Monday, April 7th to learn what teams kids are on and the game schedules. Each participant will receive a jersey that is to be returned to JPRD at the end of the season and shin guards are mandatory to play.
