It’s the final day of Severe Weather Awareness Week and the focus is on flooding.

Adair and Guthrie County Emergency Management Coordinator Jeremy Cooper says how flooding affects someone can change depending on where it’s happening, and what kind of flooding it is. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio that the area hasn’t seen much flooding in recent years though.

“We don’t deal with a lot of flooding issues in our area. You see it is really common for flash flood issues like in metropolitan areas such as Des Moines and that kind of stuff. We do get a little bit of aerial flooding from time to time, but of course we’ve been in a drought for the last five years or so. So we really don’t see a huge impact of aerial flooding.”

Cooper mentions that when there is flooding, he reminds people of the common saying “Turn around. Don’t drown,” meaning that if someone comes across a flooded road, the best course of action is to turn around and find a different way. He explains that it actually isn’t that hard for running water to sweep a car off the road when flooding is present.
