The Jefferson Parks and Recreation Department is inviting youth in grades fourth through eighth to a free opportunity to improve on their basketball skills.

JPRD Assistant Director Henry Pohlmeyer says parents in the community are going to host a free open gym for basketball skills every Sunday from March 30th through May 18th from 6:30-8pm at the Greene County Community Center. He explains the background of how this idea came to fruition.

“This is kind of something the coaches and the parents have driven forth. And they saw kind of an opportunity to build on what success they’ve seen during the basketball season, and they approached us and just asked, ‘Hey, can we do an open gym? We have kids that want to get better that want to continue on, you know the success they’ve seen and the skills that they’ve seen.’ Rather than just kind of changing or going to the next sport, let’s kind of keep on going where we’re at.”

Pohlmeyer adds that there is no charge for this multi-week opportunity and kids that participate do not have to attend every week while the program is going on. Contact the community center for more questions at 515-386-3412.
