Perry High School is in the midst of their spring musical, as they will be performing a couple more times throughout the weekend.
According to Musical Director Randy Peterson, students are putting on a production of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.” He outlines the premise is six students compete against each other as they learn life lessons along the way. Senior Hunter Ayres, who is playing William Morris Barfee, describes how relatable his character is to himself and the type of strategies he’s using to fully embody Barfee.
“Fun fact is I have a lot of bad allergies and so does Barfee, so it’s not that bad, I just have to pretend like I always can’t breathe and kind of sound nasally all the time, but he’s also just kind of a jerk, so it’s been kind of fun honestly to finally get to play like the upbeat jerk, and he is better than everyone else, he doesn’t think it, he is.”
Peterson reveals that guests attending the show should be aware that students will invite four audience members up on stage to participate in the spelling competition. He confirms that the show is taking place at the Perry Performing Arts Center, 1200 18th Street, tonight at 7pm and tomorrow at 2pm. Peterson notes tickets cost $8 for adults and $5 for students, which can be bought either online or at the door. The link to purchase tickets digitally can be found here.
