The Jefferson Water Department will be doing its spring water main flushing soon

Public Works Director Dave Morlan says water mains will be flushed Monday through Wednesday in different sections of town. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio that if residents are experiencing low water pressure it is temporary because of the water mains being flushed. Morlan talks about the possibility that residents may also see a discoloration right after water mains are flushed out.

“It’s from the iron in the lines that separates out. Especially on dead end water mains, it’ll collect and then when you flush them out, it stirs everything up and cleans them out good. So that stirs that up also and they’ll see that in their faucets.”

However, Morlan notes that the discoloration is also temporary. He states that the water mains are flushed twice every year, once in the spring and fall, as a preventative measure to ensure the longevity of the water system. He advises people to not do white or light colored laundry on the day that their water mains are flushed, because the discoloration could get on clothes. He recommends that if that happens, to contact the Water Department for a solution that will get rid of that.
