The suspect who died on Tuesday morning in a law enforcement shooting incident in Dallas County has been identified.

According to Dallas County Chief Deputy Bret Maxwell, 51-year-old Vonderrick Rayford of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was initially stopped for excessive speeding around 1:30am on Interstate-80 by mile marker 104. Maxwell notes that during the traffic stop, Rayford immediately exited his vehicle and opened fire on a Dallas County Deputy, which led to a brief standoff as additional law enforcement officers came to assist in the matter. A subsequent investigation revealed that Rayford was allegedly driving a reported stolen vehicle out of Colorado and the firearm he used in the shooting was allegedly also stolen.

Investigators also discovered that Rayford had an outstanding warrant for his arrest in Wisconsin. Maxwell says that all involved law enforcement remain on administrative leave in accordance with standard protocol. He adds that the Division of Criminal Investigation is continuing to scope out all the evidence in this case. The Adair County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Adel and Stuart Police Departments, and Iowa State Patrol assisted at the scene.
