Guthrie County Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will be taking part in the Extension Region 14 Livestock Workshop.

Youth Coordinator Rachel Blum says that the workshop is something to help teach 4-H and FFA members about different kinds of livestock. She tells Raccoon Valley Radio why the workshop is important not only to those who wish to attend, but also to the organizations they are part of.

“Across the state, we’re just trying to build more youth (interest) and help them learn more about livestock, try to get them into maybe a new species that they have not done before, and continue to build those numbers in livestock. We’ve kind of seen a downhill trend of youth wanting to do livestock or know more about them. So we’re just trying to get the idea put in their head about, there’s so many opportunities, so many different livestock animals that you can go out and show. So just kind of get them to learn more about general and daily care, the animal, the fitting and grooming, and the feeding/nutrition side of things too.”

Blum mentions that the workshop is on April 26th, but that those interested in attending should sign up by calling the Guthrie County Extension Office in Guthrie Center. She adds that Region 14 includes Boone, Carrol Greene and Guthrie Counties, and that the workshop will actually be held at the Greene County Fairgrounds in Jefferson.
