Iowa’s Third District Congressman Zach Nunn is hoping to stop China from exploiting the United States through applications like TikTok.

At the beginning of April, it was announced that President Donald Trump would postpone enforcement of the social media application TikTok ban that is still looking to go through unless the parent company ByteDance finds a new buyer. Nunn tells Raccoon Valley Radio that he served as a Career Counter Intelligence Officer in the military, where he’s been stationed in China.

Nunn reveals that he’s seen firsthand the way China manipulates their own citizens by suppressing freedom of speech. He says there is a collection of mass amounts of information on not only their people, but Americans as well with the help of TikTok. Nunn believes that congress made the correct decision to force ByteDance to find a new buyer. Nunn is on the China Select Committee and is planning to have them take responsibility for their actions.

“We’re going to continue to hold China accountable for its intellectual property theft, its direct threat to the United States and our allies, and making sure that communist China has no ability to get any access to our kids or our own information by exploiting social media apps like TikTok.”

Nunn acknowledges that TikTok is a good platform, as long as it’s in the right hands, which he stresses is not the Chinese government. He adds that if TikTok would be open to being purchased within the U.S., he advocates for them to operate in the state of Iowa as there are plenty of opportunities for innovation.
