The greenhouse at Greene County High School/Coltrane Carlson-Raccoon Valley Radio
Anyone that is looking for flowers and other plants to have in their own gardens this year, one non-profit organization in Jefferson can help with that.
The Greene County FFA Chapter and the Greene County High School agriculture students are hosting the annual Plant Sale today through Friday at the greenhouse at the high school. Greene County FFA President Kayla Frederick was a freshman after the greenhouse was originally built five years ago, and she was excited to have the facility up and running for last year’s plant sale. She talks about some of the technology that is in the climate-controlled building.

“So it stays around like 80 degrees. In your class, if you’re signed up for the day, you come in and you check on the temperature to make sure that it’s not getting too cold, so we don’t have our plants freezing and dying. And also, if it gets too hot, there are ventilations on the outside that open automatically to let some air in, and there’s also fans in there that run all the time if they’re needed, they turn on automatically as well.”
Frederick shares her thoughts about getting to use the greenhouse again this year to grow and mature their plants for their annual fundraiser.
“It’s been very exciting to use it, finally, because we got to have our first plant sale again, since I don’t even know how many years. We got to learn a whole bunch of stuff about the greenhouse, and to figure out things that go into it, and learn responsibility when taking care of the plants. It was super exciting to actually see our plants see our plants blossom from when we got them as little babies and then they were super pretty.”
The Plant Sale is going on today and tomorrow from 2:30-6pm, and then on Friday from 7-8:30am and 2:30-6pm. Some of the items that are available for purchase include hanging baskets, geraniums, petunias, and begonias, among others.
