A state legislator is seeking an opportunity to provide a voice for Iowans at the federal level.
According to a press release, District 14 Senator Sarah Trone-Garriott officially announced her candidacy for Iowa’s Third Congressional District. The release outlines that she was a member of the AmeriCorps Volunteers In Service to America that supports victims of domestic violence, then attended Harvard Divinity School to deepen her understanding of faith while working at a women’s shelter and a youth-focused nonprofit.
Trone-Garriott grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota and was a pastor at a Lutheran Church in rural Virginia, before moving to Iowa in 2013 to lead Faith Lutheran Church in Clive. Trone-Garriott explains that she ran for the state senate in 2020 after she was frustrated with elected leaders who she believed were not listening to the concerns of citizens in her community. After being elected in 2020, Trone-Garriott also won re-election bids in 2022 and 2024, as she tells Raccoon Valley Radio she wants to give proper representation to Iowans.
“For me, public service is a calling. And so, I ran for the state legislature because I saw opportunities to help my neighbors through state government (and) felt that I had some gifts to offer.”
Trone-Garriott says she has a strong desire to not only listen to residents, but is committed to putting her words into action to support them.
