One bill that was recently signed into law was an achievement for the lawmaker that ran it.
District 24 Senator Jesse Green says his vaccine exemption notification bill, Senate File 6, requires any public school, college or daycare facility to disclose the vaccine exemptions that are allowed under state law already so that parents and families are aware of those measures. He points out that it has been a long process from where he started to arrive at seeing this legislation become law.
“It was kind of bittersweet because a year ago it was on the debate calendar, just one vote left to take and the Senate didn’t bring it up. There was another bill that was amended to it a year ago that leadership didn’t like, and so it ended up killing the entire bill. But this year, I had to start from scratch and found a House member to help shepherd it over there to make sure that no other legislation got amended to it.”
Green has grown to appreciate the legislative process and seeing how the different components work when you are running a bill and the different drafts it can go through. He adds that the disclosure is typically done during the registration process for a student or a child going into a daycare facility.
