Award winners (l-r) Sadie Shannon, Emma Ewalt, Noah Hinote, Kamden Kinne
Senior Awards Night was Wednesday at Greene County High School and four awards having to do with athletics and activities were presented. The Lisa Brinkmeyer Award is presented for the first time by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. The Bernie Saggau Award is presented at high schools statewide from the Iowa High School Athletic Association. The Male Rams of the Year Award has been presented for more than 60 years and the female version of the award has been given out since 1972.
Sadie Shannon is the Brinkmeyer Award recipient, given in memory of the former longtime IGHSAU employee. The Brinkmeyer Award honors a schools top graduating senior female athlete whose experiences throughout her high school career as a scholar, an athlete, and a leader in her school and in her community have influenced her life and empowered her to have a positive impact on others.
Kamden Kinne is the Saggau Award recipient, presented in the name of the former Executive Secretary of the IHSAA. It’s presented annually to the graduating student who best exemplifies a patriotic spirit, with strong religious and moral convictions, living and professing the qualities of honesty, integrity, and sportsmanship; believing that both games and life should be conducted by the rules.
The Ram of the Year Awards are presented to a male and female athlete that has exhibited talent, plus leadership qualities on and off the playing field. Academics is also a consideration. Head coaches nominate student-athletes and an anonymous committee makes the final decisions. Emma Ewalt is the Female Ram of the Year and Noah Hinote is the Male Ram of the Year. Both are State track & field meet veterans. Ewalt was also an honorable mention All-Conference volleyball player in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference as a senior, and Hinote is a three-time State Cross-Country Meet participant and an All-Conference baseball player.
