The Greene County Board of Supervisors met in regular session on Monday.
During reports, Greene County Treasurer Katlynn Mechaelsen announced that the Treasurer’s Office will be closed to the public this Wednesday.
Then, during open forum, Andy Krieger of Krieger’s Flower Shop and Greenhouses, addressed the Board. He said he was not contacted after he submitted bids for the plantings in a landscaping project that was recently completed at the Greene County Courthouse. Krieger mentioned that he was told by the contractor and the County Auditor that his bids were too high and the decision was to go in a different direction. He requested that in the future, the Board asks for an itemized list of a bid so they get a fuller picture of what items cost. The Board acknowledged the request.
Assistant County Attorney Laura Snider said County Attorney Thomas Laehn would be back to work later this week, after his wife gave birth to their second child.
County Engineer Wade Weiss gave an update on the South Grimmell Road bridge. He said the contractor had completed the south approach and will be looking to do the north approach soon, while also needing to install guardrails. He anticipated around June 1st being the completion date for that project.
The Board then heard an update from Jefferson City Administrator Scott Peterson. He told the Board that the playing surface was added to the pickleball court at Russell Park and it should be open by the end of this week for people to begin to use. He anticipated that the airport fuel farm project will begin later this fall with the demolition of the current structure and the installation of the new fuel farm with jet and aviation fuel to begin next spring. He also mentioned that single stream recycling in the city has improved overall by 50 percent more tonnage than it was previously when recycling was collected separately.
Next, the Board approved the second reading of a new ordinance on public sex acts, as well as transferring tax increment financing to debt service for the Career Academy of $630,000 for the principal and $62,242 for interest payment. The Board also approved a road closure on County Road P-29, for the last 1.5 miles north to the Webster County line. Weiss mentioned that the road would not be closed until the other road projects were completed.
Then, the Board amended the Iowa Department of Transportation 2025 fiscal year budget with the Secondary Roads Department. Weiss said there was a $100,000 addition to the revenue because of higher than expected money coming in for selling some equipment, which then offset the additional expenses for the Snake Creek bridge project, due to the delay with the Topeka Shiner fish restriction. The Supervisors additionally approved two resolutions for the Greene County Ambulance Department to hire Amanda Brubank as a part-time driver and Megan Lange as a full-time advanced emergency medical technician. Finally, the Supervisors went into drainage to act as the Drainage District Trustees and approved to reassign a project with Drainage District 20 from Bolton and Menk to Agrivia for engineering services. Drainage District Clerk Michelle Fields said the services were not started by Bolton and Menk for the landowners that petitioned to install a relief tile to take pressure off of the main in that district that is located north of Churdan.
