A Jefferson man was recently arrested for allegedly using someone else’s debt card to make unauthorized purchases last month.
According to court documents, the Greene County Sheriff’s Office began an investigation on May 1st after the victim’s parent told a deputy that their teen left a debt card in an atm machine after making a deposit on April 25th. During the investigation, the deputy found that the next day, three transactions had been made within two hours at the Casey’s General Store in Scranton, where about $381 of gasoline had been purchased.
The criminal complaint states that the deputy obtained surveillance footage and noticed the time of each transaction lined up with the same white truck that appeared to have made the purchases. The deputy also noticed a 55-gallon blue drum in the bed of the truck. The deputy then discovered that the truck belonged to 33-year-old Daniel Tasler who lives in Jefferson. A search warrant was executed on May 1st of the Jefferson property, where drug paraphernalia residue was seized, along with the blue 55-gallon drum that was found inside a woodshed.
Court documents show that when Tasler was questioned, he said he used the atm machine on April 25th, but denied obtaining the victim’s debt card, as well as using it to make purchases of gasoline. He claimed he was in Bayard on April 26th and may have stopped for gasoline at the Scranton Casey’s. Court documents show that as for the blue drum, Tasler said it contained racing fuel that was so old it would smell like gasoline. The deputy looked inside and noticed the odor of fresh gasoline. The blue drum was then seized for evidence. A test kit was performed on May 5th of the drug residue and it was positive for marijuana.
An arrest warrant was issued on May 7th charging Tasler with a Class D Felony for credit card fraud of a minor victim-under $10,000, and two serious misdemeanors for his first offense for possession of marijuana and fourth degree theft. Tasler was arrested on May 9th, and he was booked and released from the Greene County Jail after posting a $6,000 cash or surety bond.
