The Paton-Churdan boys’ track & field squad completed the regular season last night at the Merritt-Charger Invitational in Guthrie Center at ACGC High School. The girls ended their regular season late last week, so all that’s left for the Rockets is the postseason, which starts in Madrid this Thursday starting at 4 p.m. in a Class 1A Coed State Qualifying Meet.

At ACGC, P-C sophomore Trevon Keely set a new personal best and he increased his own school record in the high jump, winning the event by clearing the bar at six feet, eight inches. Keely is now the sole state leader among Class 1A high jumpers. He also placed third in the 100 meter dash in 11.58 seconds, the other event he competed in.

The Rockets scored 18 points, good for thirteenth place among 14 teams. Earlham won the team title with 109 points.

Keely ranks high going into the Madrid State Qualifying Meet in the maximum four events. His six feet, eight inch clearance in the high jump is first among jumpers at Madrid, while his 21′ 0″ effort in the long jump ranks second. He also enters the competition at Madrid with the second fastest 200 meter time at 22.70 seconds, and he ranks third in the 100 at 11.25 seconds.

Only the event winner at State Qualifying Meets automatically qualifies for the May 22-24 Coed State Meet in Des Moines in Class 1A, and the next 14 best performances statewide also qualify.
