A vital bridge project in Jefferson is coming to an end soon.

Greene County Engineer Wade Weiss says the South Grimmell Road Bridge started this past fall and has progressed nicely, despite about a one month delay from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and slow communication about a particular subject.

“And it had to do with signage for canoeing and the (Raccoon) river had really no water that last year. So that was a little frustrating for us. That was held up because they (the DNR) had not gotten back to us.”

Weiss points out a new area with the structure that the contractor, Godbersen-Smith Construction Company, is also doing to help with the motoring traffic.

“We’ve made some improvements to the super elevation coming into the bridge, coming from the south side. So we have some new pavement to go in there, and then on the north side, also.”:

Weiss adds that the project is anticipated to be completed around June 1st. The Greene County Board of Supervisors approved the project at $2,088,062 in July 2024. A grant with the Iowa Department of Transportation City Bridge Funds paid $1.5 million through the city of Jefferson toward the total cost of the project, with the County paying for the rest.
