Greene County had its girls and boys track & field teams in Ogden on a warm and very windy Thursday for a Class 2A State Qualifying Meet. In 2A, all first and second place finishes are automatic qualifiers for the May 22-24 State Coed Meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. The field of 24 is then completed with the next eight best performances in each event statewide that did not place first or second.
Greene County automatically qualified five boys’ events and three girls’ events for State. Head girls’ coach Derek Merek and boys’ head coach Chad Morton are both hoping for additional qualifiers on an At-Large basis, and that list should be released later today.
The boys won a trio of relays including the distance medley in 3:38.53 with junior Broc Stream, sophomore Zach Stalder, senior Nick Stream, and junior Drew Wolterman, the 4 x 400 meter relay in 3:30.30 with both Nick and Broc Stream, senior Lane Fields, and Wolterman, and the 4 x 800 meter relay in 8:21.28 with seniors Nick Stream, Crew Conner, and Noah Hinote, along with Wolterman. Broc Stream was the runner up in the boys’ long jump at 22 feet, 1-3/4″, while Kamden Kinne was second in the shot put at 52 feet, 7-1/4″.
The girls did not win an event, but were second in one relay and two field events. Senior Emma Ewalt was second in the discus throw at 125 feet, nine inches, and senior Daniele Madsen placed second in the shot put at 37 feet, 5-1/2″. The distance medley relay was second in 4:22.49 with sophomore Sara Morlan, junior Addison Gannon, junior Becca Anderson, and junior Kaycee Pittman.
Roland-Story (Story City) won the boys’ team title with 111 points with MVAOCOU (Maple Valley) at 102, with Southeast Valley (Gowrie) at 83, and Greene County was fourth among 12 teams with 76 points.
