Memorial Day services are taking place across Greene County, with the city of Jefferson seeing two of them.
Barb Labate, with the Jefferson American Legion Post #11, says the ceremony at the Jefferson City Cemetery begins at 10:45am. The Master of Ceremonies, American Legion Post #11 Vice Commander Jim Andrew, will open the program, followed by the invocation, and then the Jefferson Fire Department will present the US Flag and the Lindsay “Medal of Honor” Flag.
Labate says the program continues with the playing of the “National Anthem” and the “March of the Armed Forces” by the Greene County High School Band, followed by this year’s American Legion Essay winner, fifth grader Lyndsie Goughnour, will recite her speech. Next, the Memorial Day Address will be delivered by Pastor Dennis Martens of the Trinity Lutheran Church, which will then be followed by the Salute to our Fallen Heroes, along with Taps and the Benediction. She adds that the Jefferson Elks Lodge will be putting up all of the flags at the city cemetery on Saturday and then remove them after the program on Monday. Any volunteers to help with either can show up those days.
Labate notes that the service at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Jefferson will be at 9:30am on Memorial Day.
Some of the other community Memorial Day services include an 8am mass service at the St. Patrick’s Historical Church, followed by a military service at the St. Patrick’s Cemetery. Then at 9:30am will be a military service at the Highland Township Cemetery near Churdan, along with the Town and Country Band performing. There are two additional services taking place at 11am at the Franklin Township Cemetery near Cooper and the Rippey Cemetery.
