It is insect season, and the City of Perry will begin spraying for mosquitoes tonight.

Marketing and Engagement Coordinator Chris Cohea confirms that city crews will come through Perry tonight at dusk to eliminate mosquitoes in town. According to Public Works Director Josh Wuebker, crews will be spraying with contact insecticides, which will affect living mosquitoes and not ones that aren’t born yet. He asks residents to remove any items that attract mosquitoes.

“The best thing people can do is if there’s old tires or they have something outside that’s holding water, it’s just a breeding ground for mosquitoes. So if people can try to dump those things out (and) get rid of that stuff, it just helps us out a lot more.”

Wuebker mentions the mosquito machine the city uses is quiet and won’t disrupt family activities. He adds that if there is inclement weather on Thursdays, then the spraying will be rescheduled to either Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Following the first spraying tonight, Wuebker notes the Public Works Department will plan to do it every Thursday at dusk until the first frost.
