Trevon Keely

Paton-Churdan sophomore Trevon Keely placed seventh on Thursday in the Class 1A boys’ long jump at Drake Stadium in Des Moines during day one of the Coed State Track & Field Championships. He also finished tenth in the preliminaries of the 200 meter dash, and will be one of the favorites to win the high jump this afternoon.

All 24 long jumpers get three attempts, then the best nine, plus ties, advance to the finals. Keely was in fourteenth place after two attempts, then hit a jump that measured 21 feet, 3-1/2 inches, putting him securely in the finals where he had three more attempts. Even thoughKeelye didn’t improve that distance in the finals, he placed seventh.

The 200 meter dash prelimaries were held Thursday with Keely running 22.68 seconds and placing tenth. Only the eight fastest advance to Saturday’s final.

The 1A high jump today will have Keely trying to reach the top of the podium after clearing the bar at six feet, five inches and finishing second in 2024. He enters this afternoon’s competition having a personal best of six feet, eight inches this season.
