Motorcycles have become more prevalent on the roadways and this month is dedicated to reminders for other motorists to be more aware of them.

May is National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month and Jefferson Police Chief Mark Clouse urges other motorists to be vigilant of knowing where a motorcycle is near you, especially in someone’s blind spot.

“Motorcycles can hide in your blind spot very, very easily, and they can move quite a little bit beside you and still be in your blind spot. So you know, we just need to do a good job there, making sure that we’re looking over our shoulder, whatever we can do. A lot of that falls on the motorcyclist himself, too. He needs to be where he needs to be safe as well.”

Clouse advises people that live outside of the city limits to make sure to blow grass clippings from the roadway, as motorcyclists that are going highway speeds can slide on grassy surfaces like it were glass, which can then result in a crash.
