A bill drafted by US Representative for Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District Zach Nunn looks to protect the elderly.

Nunn says that the bipartisan Guarding Unprotected Aging Retirees from Deception (GUARD) Act would help law enforcement with investigations into scams aimed at retired individuals. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio why he and other Representatives introduced the bill.

“First and foremost, this is to help protect our seniors right here in Iowa from fraudsters across the country. Tragically, in 2023 alone, Iowa reported over 13,000 cases of fraud, and that resulted in about $50 million in senior savings being stolen from them right here in Iowa. On a federal level, it’s even worse.”

Nunn adds that 21st Century tools are needed for local law enforcement to investigate fraud cases and the bill provides training from the federal level to state and local law enforcement to do so. He says there are so many ways that fraud can happen through scams that are going through social media, emails, text and phone calls to steal as much as they can.
