With it being early in the crop cycle, many farmers may not have looked too much into pesticides applications yet.

Iowa State University Extension Field Agronomist Mike Witt says that he hasn’t heard many reports about insects yet, but that there is one pest that he has seen and heard about.

“There have been some reports of slugs across the area. Again, there are slug-icides that can be utilized, but we have to make sure that those are financially feasible for what we are looking at as far as that economic impact.”

Witt mentions that so far there haven’t been any reports of army worms or black cut worms coming into fields, but that if there are farmers seeing them, they can choose to apply a pesticide should they need to. He adds that he also hasn’t heard many reports of alfalfa weevil, but that not many people have had their first cutting for the year, so that may change later on.
