Perry boy’s soccer takes the pitch tonight at Dewey Field against South Tama in the 2A Semifinals in Substate 3.

The Bluejays earned the top seed after a 9-4-3 regular season.  The Trojans are coming off an upset in the first round after knocking off Benton Community 1-0.  That was just the third win of the year for South Tama.

Perry enters on a three game losing streak and they haven’t played a match since May 12.  Despite not playing a match, Gary Overla is happy with the way the squad had been getting prepared..

“We’ve been practicing ever since and honestly practice sessions run about an hour and 15 minutes to an hour and a half and they’ve been pretty sharp and pretty intense.”

After being one of the most prolific scorers in 2024, Jacobo Cerna-Gomez has transitioned into one of the best passers.  The junior is tied for second in the state with 21 assists on the season.  Jonathan Banuelos has exploded during his senior campaign.  The recent graduate has found the back of the net 22 times this year.  The Bluejay manager mentioned the middle of the field the strength for the Trojans.

“They’re very straightforward and they don’t seem be overly creative or anything like that in the final third.  I would say their defense that’s the area that we want to exploit the most.”

Winner advances to the Substate Final to be played on Thursday night against Knoxville or Ballard.  Kick off is set for 7P at Dewey Field.
