Tomorrow night is the Iowa High School Musical Theatre Awards Showcase and Greene County High School will be represented once again.

The Greene County High School Music Department received six nominations for awards and in addition to that two individuals Karlee Fagerlind, who played Flotsom and Carter Pettersen, who portrayed Sebastian, were selected by Choir Director David Heupel to perform as part of a medley ensemble at the showcase. Fagerlind talks about her reaction when she found out that she was going to be performing tomorrow night.

“It was really cool. I didn’t really want to do it at first (the musical) but Heupel is good at convincing. So it was really cool just to find out that like I got picked for something like that. It was definitely exciting, especially because I have someone else doing it with me. Yeah it was definitely shocking at first but it’s really exciting.”

As for the recent graduate Daniele Madsen, she will also have the opportunity to perform an excerpt from her solo as Ursula, “Poor Unfortunate Souls.”

“Internally, I’m screaming like a little girl (and) on the outside, I’m happy, I’m grateful for these opportunities that I get. I know that I’ve been working my butt off for that Ursula role. And I can’t wait, that’s all, like I just can’t wait for it, I’m so excited, and just enjoy my time. It’s kind of like the state version of theater, like it’s just enjoying that you made it and you get to show off what you got.”

Madsen earned an Outstanding Achievement in a Principal Role from the IHSMTA. Heupel adds that this will be the first time a Greene County student is performing as a soloist at the showcase since Gavin Vander Linden did it in 2023 as Gomez from the “Addams Family” musical.
