District 12 Senator Amy Sinclair

With the 2025 Iowa legislative session having been finished for a few weeks now, it has allowed time for residents and lawmakers alike to look back on what occurred.

Senator for District 12 Amy Sinclair shares her thoughts after this time she’s been able to take reviewing the session, and everything that happened during it.

“I feel like it was a little less productive than sessions we’ve had in the past. We did a handful of really big things, but not the exciting stuff that we may have done in previous years, like our flat income tax or the school choice or some of those big flashy things. But overall, it was maybe a slower year for getting things done than it has been in the past. I think sometimes maybe that’s a good thing, sitting back and passing less big changes so that Iowans aren’t caught off guard by new laws or by changes that they didn’t anticipate.”

Sinclair mentions that the session started out big, with an amendment to Iowa Code 216, aligning it more with federal categories than what the state had. She adds that another big item came at the end of session, when they passed a bill that continued previous work done to improve the state’s unemployment system by lowering employer tax rates.
