Coach Tom Kennedy’s Greene County High School softball season began in Perry last night with the veteran coach sitting on 299 career victories. The Heart of Iowa Activities Conference contest went to the Rams by a 3-1 final on a cool, cloudy, windy, and off and on night with sprinkles just north of Perry High School. Win number 300 didn’t come easy for the coach and his team after the game was scoreless through the first five innings.

The Rams scored twice in the sixth for a 2-0 lead, but the Jayettes countered with one run. In the seventh, the Rams added an insurance run for a 3-1 lead that held up. The Rams had nine hits, six of which were on the infield. The two slap hitters at the top of the order combined for five of those with three from junior Kaycee PIttman and two by senior Payton Kokenge. Sophomore Sara Morlan also had an infield single  Junior Becca Anderson had two singles to the outfield with one for sophomore Bellah Johnson. Anderson and sophomore Alivya Smith each had one run batted in.

Sophomore pitcher Alaina Heard had the best seven inning outing of her career, allowing no earned runs on two infield hits. She walked four and struck out seven.

The Rams open the home portion of the schedule tonight in Jefferson vs. Class 3A number 5 PCM (Monroe).
