
The Adel-DeSoto-Minburn Softball Team battled hard against Johnston for Teacher Appreciation Night on Friday, but was hit by a late flurry in the fifth inning, losing 11-5.
The Dragons were able to score first in the top of the 1st inning, as senior Grace Anderson, who had a monster game, captured the initial run to lead 1-0. That lead would be short-lived after ADM junior Lauren Hagedorn tied the game after she was walked and later hit in by senior Madi James for an RBI single. Johnston took the lead back in the top of second inning, with sophomore Emily Swalley to go on top 2-1.
The Tigers gained traction in the third inning with a leadoff double from senior Aniston Tollari, who would come into score from an RBI single from Hagedorn. ADM added two more runs with Hagedorn and sophomore Kinzie Maxwell, as the Tigers led 4-2 for the first time in the game.
However, in the top of the 4th inning, the Dragons’ Anderson knotted things up with a two-run homer, senior Jensyn Tenpas scored to give the advantage back to Johnston at 5-4. From there, the Dragons got five runs in the fifth inning, and one in the 6th inning, as the Tigers marked one in the seventh inning with sophomore Makenna Pitlick, but ultimately fell 11-5.
For Johnston, Anderson led the way, going 4-4 from the plate and scored three times. On ADM’s side, Hagedorn scored twice on a 1-3 appearance from the plate, while Tollari tallied one run, going 2-4. Winning pitcher was senior Berkley McClish, who went all seven innings, allowed 10 hits, five runs, walked six batters, but struck out seven. ADM sophomore Makenna Pitlick pitched 5.1 innings, allowed eight hits, 10 runs, walked seven batters, and had two strikeouts. Freshman Chloe Olthoff went 1.2 innings and gave up one run.
The Dragons improve to 2-2 on the year, while the Tigers drop to 1-1 and will be playing in the Winterset Tournament today.
