Following an officer-related shooting that occurred along Interstate-80 in mid-April, Dallas County Attorney Matt Schultz supports the investigation that the Iowa Attorney General’s Office did with their report.

Back on April 15th around 1:30am, a traffic stop was conducted on I-80 for excessive speeding. During the traffic stop, 51-year-old Vonderrick Rayford opened fire on the responding officers, causing several law enforcement units to be on the scene. Several of those officers returned fire and ended up killing Rayford. Many officers were put on administrative leave in accordance with standard protocol.

After reviewing the evidence from the case in the Iowa Attorney General’s Office, Schultz agreed that the actions taken by law enforcement were justified and it was a miracle that none of them were injured in the process. He commented that the involved officers acted professionally under very difficult circumstances and demonstrated courage in their duty to protect the community.
