Recently Governor Kim Reynolds signed several bills into law, including one near and dear to one area representative.

District 23 House Representative Ray Sorensen says that House File 835, or the “Seizure Safe School” bill is one that he has worked on varying iterations of since he was elected to office for the first time. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio that he authored the bill after learning more about seizures when his daughter began to have them, and why he wanted to help school be prepared for students who may suffer from them.

“There are over 40 different types of seizures. Not all of them are like the grand mal seizure that a lot of people think of when they think of someone having a seizure. Some of them are very subtle. And what this aims to do is educate faculty and staff and nurses at schools how to identify and handle and deal with seizures like that. And then also to deliver medication.”

Sorensen mentions that this version of the bill takes the trainings teachers would need to do for seizures, concussions and several others, as there are many for teachers to take. He adds that it also puts together a study group to review those trainings, and decide how often they would be needed, and if they are needed.
