The Summer Reading Program has gotten started at the Mary J Barnett Memorial Library.

Library Director Jerri Hawkins says that they’ve already held the first event of the program, but have many more to do as well. She tells Raccoon Valley Radio that the program isn’t just about the fun activities, but that there’s a chance for prizes as well.

“During the month of June, you need to be reading and tracking your minutes. And we have a couple activity sheets that you can do too, and you turn those in. So you get a drawing ticket for every event you come to. You get a drawing ticket for every reading log you turn in. You get a drawing ticket for every activity sheet you turn in. So there’s lots of ways for these kiddos that are registered for summer reading programs to earn drawing tickets to be put in a drawing for some of our prizes.”

Hawkins mentions that they will have a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics lab on June 9th at 4pm, with programs from the Guthrie County Iowa State University Extension and Outreach on June 11th and 25th at 2pm. She adds that another big event is the end of the Summer Reading Program Party on June 27th at noon, when the prize drawings will occur.
