Adel-DeSoto-Minburn senior Jada Grove displayed her leadership by capturing two goals on Tuesday during the Class 2A State 1st Round game at Lied Recreation Field in Ames, beating Independence 2-1 to head to the semifinals tomorrow.
It was the first ever matchup between the Tigers and Mustangs as the game was scoreless in the first 40 minutes of play with both defenses performing well. However, in the second half, ADM’s Grove broke the drought 10 minutes and 13 seconds in with a header past Independence senior Goalie Lindsay Beyer as she was assisted by freshman Rowan Crowell.
That lead would not last long for the Tigers as Mustang sophomore Emelia Lange would respond 44 seconds later with an unassisted goal that went just left of ADM senior Goalie Alayna Freeman to immediately take the momentum back and tie the game at 1-1.
Then about 10 minutes later, Independence freshman Arabella Louvar was assessed a yellow card for tripping, giving Grove a penalty kick, which went right over the head of Beyer for the go-ahead goal and her second of the night (20:26). That goal gave her 100 for her high school career, as the Tigers would hold off to win 2-1. Grove shares how ADM kept their composure following the quick strike from Independence.
“Well coming off of that, that was kind of the high like it had been a scoreless first half, so we knew we needed to keep our heads up and that we needed to just go back and get it.”
With the win, the Tigers advance to the semifinals to take on the number one seeded Waverly-Shell Rock Go-Hawks tomorrow afternoon at 2:30pm at the Lied Recreation Field in Ames. Raccoon Valley Radio will carry the broadcast on K107.9 KKRF.
