Coach Tom Kennedy’s Greene County High School girls’ hosted Saydel (Des Moines) on Wednesday night in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference softball in Jefferson. The varsity contest was heard on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com with the Rams winning 10-0 by the 1o-run rule in just 3-/12 innings. The Rams are now 3-2 in the conference and 3-4 overall while the Eagles are 0-5 this season and 0-4 in Heart of Iowa Conference play.

Sophomore Alaina Heard picked up the pitching victory by tossing a one-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and just two walks. The Eagles had just two base runners, both in the third inning.

Greene County scored twice in the first inning, followed by a five run second, and three more in the third. This is the first season Iowa high school softball is played without the now defunct 12-run rule after three innings. The 10-run rule is after four innings, or 3-1/2 if the home team is ahead, and like the college rule, the game is shortened to five innings with a margin of at least eight runs.

Eight of the nine Rams had at least one hit with a double, single, and three runs batted in for sophomore Bellah Johnson. Sophomore Sara Morlan singled twice and had one RBI, with a bunt single and two RBI for senior Violet Reedy. Senior Payton Kokenge had an infield single and she knocked in one run batted in, and junior Kaycee Pittman singled on the infield. Sophomore Makenna Ebersole doubled and Heard had a bse hit. Junior Becca Anderson drove in a run, and sophomore Alivya Smith had a single.

Greene County remains at home tonight vs. Class 1A Glidden-Ralston in JV/varsity non-conference play.
