Nearly ideal weather conditions on Tuesday served as the backdrop for Greene County High School baseball in Winterset as the Huskies won the non-conference game, 6-5. Coach Kyle Stalder’s Rams are now 1-7 on the season while the Huskies have a record of eight wins and six losses.

Greene County broke a scoreless tie with one run in the etop of the fourth inning and three more in the fifth. The Huskies put one on the board in the fifth for a 4-1 lead for the Rams. A single run Greene County in the sixth made it a 5-1 lead, but Winterset scored four times in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game, 5-5. The winning run for the home team scored with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Winterset had 10 hits to nine for the Rams. Senior Crew Conner had two singles and a double and drove in a run, while six other Rams had one hit apiece. Senior Lane Fields doubled, and the Rams had singles from Gavyn Winters, Noah Hinote, Isaac Carman, sophomore Jaron Jacobs, and junior Nathan Towers. Hinote had two runs batted in with one each from Towers and Winters.

Both teams had defensive miscues with the Rams being charged with four errors and Winterset with three. Towers itched 5-1/3 inings for the Rams, allowing four runs, but just two earned runs. He struck out three batters while walking three and hitting one with a pitch. Winterset had six hits off Towers. Reliever Camden Jacobs took the pitching loss. In one inning he allowed two hits, walked three and fanned one. Both run off him were earned.

Bowen Tadlock, Josiah Hornbeck, and Waytt Swanson each had two hits for the Huskies. Reed Smith and Carsen Dinkla each had two runs batted in. Drake McDonald was the starting pitcher and Carson Cook was the winning pitcher after throwing three innings in relief.

Perry visits the Rams tonight at Allensworth Field with the varsity game set to be broadcast on 1310 AM KDLS at 5:30 p.m. with streaming on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. The varsity game is first due to weather concerns. If weather allows, the JV teams will play after the varsity game. Softball between Perry and Greene County is at the City Diamond on East Lincolnway in Jefferson. There is no JV softball game, so it’s varsity only at 5:30 p.m.
