The Adel City Council met in regular session on Tuesday.
According to Adel Mayor Jim Peters, the council held the first reading for ordinance number 422, section 41 pertaining to regulating fireworks on July 3rd, 4th, and December 31st. The new state law of Senate File 303 states that fireworks can be set off within the city limits between the hours of 9am and 10pm on July 3rd, unless it falls on a Saturday or Sunday, then will be extended to 11pm, on July 4th from 9am to 11pm, and December 31st from 9am to 12:30am. Peters shares that following the first reading, both the second and third readings were waived, so the council could adopt the amended ordinance.
Peters explains other items that were approved on the agenda included a resolution to adopt the City of Adel Employee Handbook, a resolution to accept the preliminary and final plat of White Oak Estates, a resolution in support of the Central Iowa Regional Transportation Planning Alliance Multijurisdictional Application to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Road for All Grant Program, a change order to the Adel Water Utility Improvements from $584,411.25 to $608,012.97, and the acceptance of the substantial completion to the water utility improvements.
Peters says that more approved items featured four first readings of ordinances to amend water rates, sewer rates, storm water rates, and garbage collection rates. He notes that all four items will have second readings at the council’s next meeting on June 23rd at 6pm. Peters adds that the council set a public hearing on a proposed amendment to the Southbridge Urban Renewal Plan for June 23rd at 6pm. In addition, he mentions that several members were appointed to different boards, including Lane Pralle and Danielle Roberts to the Planning and Zoning Commission, Larry Crannell to the Board of Adjustment, Del Christensen and Kacie Whipps to Parks and Recreation, then Robert Hall and Micole Chapman to the Historic Preservation Commission.
Peters describes that the council approved $101.30 in funds to spend on flower arrangements for City Council Member Bob Ockerman’s wife’s funeral that matches Adel’s Flowers and Sustenance Supplies Policy. He concludes that two items were tabled until their June 23rd meeting, which were a resolution to set the fiscal year 2025-26 fees for services and a resolution to accept the final plat of Southbridge Plat 6.
