As the Bell Tower Festival in Jefferson officially opens tonight, the main day of activities takes place tomorrow.
Bell Tower Festival Committee Chair Philip Heisterkamp says the morning festivities includes the Jefferson Fire Department’s breakfast, followed by the Ding Dong Dash run with the Jefferson Parks and Rec Department, along with a disc golf tournament at Daubendiek Park, a Civil War re-enactment at Chautauqua Park, and an Art Festival at Russell Park. The parade begins at 11am, followed by the 3-on-3 basketball tournament with JPRD, a pickleball tournament, big wheel races and a kids pedal pull, along with the brew station, vendors, and the carnival all opening after the parade.
Heisterkamp points out the Dueling Pianos are returning for another performance at 1pm, as he describes what led to the decision of the committee to have them back for another year.
“You know, last year they came and they just exceeded all expectations. They were great to work with, they put on a heck of a show, (and) they’re extremely talented. And it’s maybe the one time I’ve had dozens of people say, ‘Hey, you should have them back. Hey, they were a great idea.’ So, we’re excited that they’re willing to get us in their schedule again.”
Heisterkamp says there will also be a mud volleyball tournament and the car show starting at 1pm. Next will be the trivia contest and a bags tournament, followed by bingo and an arm wrestling tournament in the evening. To wrap up everything will be the evening musical concert with The Street, which Heisterkamp notes is the Des Moines Band of the Year, starting at 8pm, and local amateur astronomer Drew Sorensen will host a night time viewing with telescopes after dusk. Additionally, Raccoon Valley Radio’s Big Red Radio will be broadcasting live today from 3-7pm and tomorrow from 9am-6pm in front of the Mahanay Memorial Carillon Tower.
