One organization in Jefferson is inviting everyone to a public event to recognize an important holiday.

Jefferson Elks Lodge #2306 member Bill Berger says a Flag Day ceremony is taking place on Monday at 7pm with several other groups involved. He tells Raccoon Valley Radio that during the program, the history of the different versions of the US Flag are presented and reviewed since 1777. Berger points out that the Jefferson Does Drove #196 also does a Flag Day ceremony, along with inviting the Jefferson American Legion Post #11 and the Jefferson Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post #9599 to be a part of the program.

“They come on up and have an honor guard. They will show us what it takes to go ahead and fold the flag to make it into the tri-corner package when they get done with it. Each fold means something and that’ll also be done during the ceremony too, but there is a reason for that fold.”

Berger talks about his favorite parts of this activity as the only fraternal organization that officially observes Flag Day.

“The number of veterans that come on up and the public that comes up because some of them have forgotten about it, maybe we had it a lot in school, but we’ve gotten away from it now. It’s just a history, it’s information about where we came from (and) what we have done. We try to do that and keep it out in the public eye.”

Monday’s program is free and open to the public.
