The first of two Heart of Iowa Activities Conference softball games vs. Grand View Christian (Des Moines) (10-3, 6-2) is tonight for the Greene County varsity softball team. The first meeting was rained out in late May and that game is rescheduled for June 17 in Des Moines. Tonight’s game is at the Jefferson Softball Fields on East Lincolnway with varsity action set to begin around 7:30 p.m. The 2015 Greene County softball team will also be introduced tonight to celebrate 10 yeasr since that team place third in the Class 3A State Tournament. The 2014 Rams also placed third in the State Tournament..

Last night the Rams played Woodward-Granger in non-conference action in Woodward with the Hawks winning by a final of 11-6. The Rams trailed 7-1 after four innings, but put five runs on the board to make it a 7-6 game before W-G scored the final four runs of the contest in the bottom of the sixth to win by five.

The Rams had eight hits including doubles from sophomores Bellah Johnson and  Alaina Heard. Johnson drove in two runs and Heard added two singles to go with her double and she had one RBI. Sophomore Makenna Ebersole collected a single and two runs batted in, and senior Chanlyn Cunningham had a base hit and one run driven in. Senior Payton Kokenge and sophomore Sara Morlan also singled.

Coach Tom Kennedy’s Ram are 6-6 on the season and the Hawks are 8-4. Multiple illeagal pitchers were called on Ram pitcher Heard, plus defensive miscues put the Rams in a 4-0 hole in the first inning. The Rams were charged with three errors, and nine of the 11 W-G runs were earned. Heard allowed nine hits, walked five batters, hit four with pitches, and she struck the Hawks out five times.
