Tomorrow begins the 2025 Greene County Farmers Market season.
Manager Jean Walker says there will be about ten vendors to kick off the season at the new location of the Greene County Fairgrounds. She tells Raccoon Valley Radio the Fair Board talked with her to help organize the farmers market because they felt like it was a staple and needed a new home, following the announcement that the market had discontinued to be in the downtown area.
Walker points out one of the new features of the market is that it is a part of the Iowa Department of Agriculture program, “Choose Iowa.” She explains why it was important for them to be a member of the state program.
“It supports any local farmer and they’re big on farmers market just for the fact that they want to support all the produce growers and just everybody that had anything to do with farming.”
Walker notes that they can make announcements and different posts on the Choose Iowa website and there will be a representative at the first farmers market tomorrow for people to ask questions and learn more about the variety of grants that are available. She reveals another new promotional feature of a drawing to win a free basket of items from the vendors. Walker states that people can pick up a punch card either at the market or The Printer’s Box and once they spend $30 within the first two weeks, they can be entered into the drawing. She describes why she wanted to do something like this.
“I’m trying to work on getting people to realize it is now out at the fairgrounds and to get people (who) want to come out there that far. So I just thought, ‘We’re going to try to do some positive things to get people to realize that this is going to be a good thing.’”
The Greene County Farmers Market will be on the east side driveway of the fairgrounds, in the shaded area and it will be from 4-6pm every Tuesday through September 9th.
